There is considerable evidence that the club existed and was very active prior to the Second World War and, under
various names, can trace it's ancestory back to the very dawn of motoring.
Yeovil Car Club in it's present format was formed in 1949 by a group of local business men, originally for the enjoyment
of motor sport. Over the years, this was expanded to include many other aspects for the motoring enthusiast: classic and vintage
tours, treasure hunts and navigation runs, car shows and radio marshalls travelling across the country providing support to
rallies and, of course, the social calendar.
A pioneering club, it's members have organised some of the most
famous events in the motoring year. The Avalon Rally was a major competitive event in the 1970s. From 1986 the Bristol to
Weymouth/Bournemouth run was to become one of the biggest vintage car runs in the country, attacting overseas entries. Yeovil
Festival of Transport started in 1972 and ran for over 30 years, donating around £250,000 to local charities over that
time. Our current Yeovil Classic Tour started in 1988 and runs annually for classic car owners and modern sports
cars and vehicles of special interest. Pre-1973 vehicles are catered for with the Thomas Hardy Country Run, which started
in 1997 .
The club is now past it's 60th birthday and is still going from strength to strength with a full
calendar of events.
