Drive It Day 22nd April

Yeovil Car Club’s annual ‘Drive It’ day took place on Sunday 22nd April. The Mayor and Mayoress of Yeovil, Darren and Anna Shutler were at the start of the run, and waved the cars off from Palmers Garden Centre in Yeovil, with a Union Jack flag. Other members of Yeovil Car Club joined the cavalcade at various points on the journey, and together they made their way to Weymouth seafront.

On arrival at Weymouth Pavilion Car Park, the cars were met by the Mayor and Mayoress of Weymouth, Kevin and Anne Brookes, who duly inspected the vehicles. Many members of the public browsed amongst the selection of nearly 40 vehicles, with something for everyone. MG’s, Ford, Rover, BMW, VW, Austin, TVR, Mercedes, along with other makes were all on display.

Yeovil Car Club currently has well over 100 members and is a thriving club with lots of runs, events, tours and shows planned for 2018. Thanks to Ian Hall and Paul Vallis for additional photographs.

All Change at Yeovil Car Club

Yeovil Car Club held their annual AGM at the Crown and Victoria Inn at Tintinhull on 17th April.

It was all change on the committee, with Graham Dewar stepping down as Chairman after five years in this position. The Committee then elected a new Chairman and Merv Dawe was the popular choice. Ken Hunt, Membership Secretary, decided to retire from this role, but Graham Dewar volunteered to take it on as he had stepped down as Chairman. The Treasurer’s role has been reprised by Linda Dewar who had done the job in the past. Steve Selby also retired from the Committee. Jack Negus who was web co-ordinator has also stepped down, but has been replaced by Kevin Vincent.

The Committee would like to thank both Ken and Steve for all their sterling work in the past, and wish good luck to Merv, Graham, Linda and Kevin in their current roles.

24th February 2018

Yeovil Car Club’s inaugural quiz night was a great success with nearly 30 people turning up on a chilly February night for an evening’s entertainment. This different approach was suggested due to the low turnouts for the Natter and Noggins.

Quiz master for the evening was the club’s president, Colin Gosney who presided over the event. Colin set the riddles, the first one being a ‘Guess the Image’ competition. It turned out that Colin had actually taken the photographs some 40 years earlier, but the content was still as relevant today as when he snapped them all those years ago.

The anagram round was up next, and that had everyone puzzling about place names – the natural competitiveness coming out in the contestants. One contestant was heard to say to another team, ‘Speak up a bit as we can’t hear your answers!’

A break to enjoy food provided by the Rose and Crown at Tintinhull, was followed by the raffle, and one table certainly had lady luck on their side that evening!

The final round was a general knowledge quiz, but it soon became clear no one was going to get all the questions correct. Colin’s question about ‘How many Robin Reliants were taxed and on the road?’ certainly had the contestants stumped – for those interested, the answer was 94, which of course no one guessed.

The winners overall was the ‘Clever Clogs’ team but there was only 1 mark between the first and second places, so it was extremely close.

Everyone enjoyed the evening, with light hearted banter throughout. In fact it was so successful, that Graham Dewar (Chairman) suggested an annual quiz night in February 2019 which everyone agreed was a splendid idea. Bob Owen has kindly offered to be quiz master on this occasion. So make sure you check Tyre Squeals and the website for further information for 2019.
